Welcome to Maddie's Bookcase

Hello everyone!

My name is Maddie and, if you couldn't tell by the name of this blog, I am an avid book lover. I have always loved to read, write, and participate in anything literary. I've also always wanted to run a blog, so I decided that there is no time like the present.

A little about me...

I am 23 years old and I was born and raised in Minnesota. I have a bachelor's degree in graphic design and do freelance design work (check out my website at www.designbymaddie.com!) in addition to being in the United States Army as an artillerywoman. In my free time, I love to read (obviously), watch movies, listen to music, exercise, and travel. I am currently living in the great state of Texas, but Minnesota will always be my home.

My favorite genres of books are romance, historical fiction, and thrillers. Disclaimer: I gravitate to the more cute romance books rather than the popular "spicy BookTok" romances, but I read pretty much anything. The historical fiction books I tend to lean toward are WWII related, but I will read basically any time period. I also love autobiographies, especially of military veterans. A genre I'm trying to get into is fantasy. I usually struggle getting into those but I typically like them by the time I've finished them. A genre I don't read is manga. I also don't read comic books or things like that. I don't dislike manga or comic books, they're just not something I reach for.

Some of my favorite books are:

  • The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
  • The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah
  • Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell
  • Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
The books I'm currently reading are:
  • The Lake by Natasha Preston
  • The Spanish Love Deception by Elena Armas
*Usually I only read one book at a time but right now I'm reading one on my Kindle app and one in actual book form.

The rating scale I personally use is 0-5 and I write down whether I would read the book again or if I was satisfied with one read-through. I keep a journal of my thoughts about books I've read. It started as a way to document me reading through the books I owned to keep track of them all and now it's become an obsession. I look forward to finishing books (even books I don't necessarily like) because I don't write about them unless I've finished them. I started the "would I read this book again?" question so I could honestly think about whether I want to keep the book or sell it and give it a second life with someone else who might enjoy it. I sell some used books on Mercari, so feel free to check out my page if you're interested in getting some gently used books for cheaper rates than you'd get them at Barnes and Noble... shameless self promo there.

I have no idea if this blog will go anywhere, and honestly I don't really care. This is more something I just really wanted to do for myself. It will help keep me occupied in my free time. I don't know if anyone really cares about my opinion of books. I plan on writing summaries and reviews on this blog. I also may document my journey to write my own book since I want to do that.

I suppose I've rambled enough for now. I hope all of you enjoy reading my thoughts and opinions. I also would love to take book recommendations! Feel free to leave recommendations in the comments on anything I post. I also would love to hear what you all thought of the books I post about. Let's discuss!

I hope you are all having a wonderful day wherever you are in the world,

Maddie

Spice-o-meter: My Spice Rating System

Hello, fellow bookworms! I decided that since I recently posted a review of The Spanish Love Deception (which I rated a 2 of 5 for spice), I should probably make a post about my "spice" ratings, which I have now named my "Spice-o-meter". I want to make it clear that the Spice-o-meter does NOT effect the overall rating of the book! I am okay with no spice and I'm okay with spice, I just know that some people have other preferences for the books they read. Spice-free: Nothing beyond some kisses, hugging, etc. If one of my reviews doesn't have a "spice-o-meter" listed in it, it's safe to assume that it is spice-free. 1 of 5: May include hands, more kissing, "fade to black" scenes. No in-detail spice. Any books that have discussion of spice will be included in this category, even if no spice actually happens. I will write a disclaimer in my review if this is the case, because I know some people prefer books with actual spice. 2 of 5

Powerless

Powerless by Lauren Roberts Title: Powerless Author: Lauren Roberts Genre: Fantasy Published in: 2023 Age suggestion: Young adult and up Spice-o-meter: No spice My rating: 4 out of 5 My thoughts: This book I thought was pretty good. The first half of it, I got major Hunger Games vibes from it and I was a bit nervous about how the story was going to turn out, but it got so good! Don't get me wrong, I like The Hunger Games , I just was nervous that it was going to be too similar of a storyline. There were definitely parts of it that were inspired by them, but the story took a very different turn. I got addicted to this book. It took me a while to get into (I've been reading it off and on again for a month) but I finished over half of it in a couple of days. The end had a lot of action and ended on a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next books to come out. I am definitely going to be continuing this series as it comes out. In this book, it is split perspective between a g

What About Me

What About Me by Tiara Vazquez This post will contain spoilers! Title: What About Me Author: Tiara Vazquez Genre: Paranormal Romance Published in: 2022 Age suggestion: 18+ Spice-o-meter: 2 out of 5 My rating: 5 out of 5 My thoughts: I really loved this book! It was another Kindle read that I found because I'm in a Facebook reading group with the author and she was promoting her book. I downloaded it on Kindle Unlimited and I absolutely loved it. It isn't my normal read because I normally don't read paranormal stuff, but I wanted to read something from another undiscovered, new author. This one has probably been my favorite undiscovered book I've read. This book had a big plot twist at the end that I honestly didn't expect, and a beautiful ending in my opinion. This book was about a girl named Ivy who believed that a new woman at her fiancĂ©'s company (where she also worked) was trying to steal him from her. She had very bad anxiety and a past with infidelity,
