My thoughts:
This book I thought was pretty good. The first half of it, I got major Hunger Games vibes from it and I was a bit nervous about how the story was going to turn out, but it got so good! Don't get me wrong, I like The Hunger Games, I just was nervous that it was going to be too similar of a storyline. There were definitely parts of it that were inspired by them, but the story took a very different turn. I got addicted to this book. It took me a while to get into (I've been reading it off and on again for a month) but I finished over half of it in a couple of days. The end had a lot of action and ended on a cliffhanger. I can't wait for the next books to come out. I am definitely going to be continuing this series as it comes out.
In this book, it is split perspective between a girl named Paedyn and a guy named Kai. Paedyn is an Ordinary, a girl with no powers of any kind, who pretends she is a Psychic to survive in the kingdom that banished Ordinaries long ago. Kai, the prince and future Enforcer of the kingdom, has a duty to the king to carryout the murders or banishment of any Ordinary still in the kingdom, along with any other mission the king requires. Kai has been training and preparing his entire life to be in the Trials, where Elites fight to win a competition in a show of strength and intelligence, sometimes being forced to kill the other competitors. Paedyn, after saving the life of the prince, is forced into the Trials as well, at a disadvantage because of her lack of power. Kai becomes infatuated with her and, even though it's against the king's wishes, he decides to help her survive the Trials.
This book may be for you if you like:
- Split perspective
- Strong female leads
- Corrupt government and resistance stories
